Crazy! Luckily the cable frayed outside the housing where it was visible. Judging by the wear on the front fork, I'm surprised those brake-arms are still in working order!
Actually that length of cable is permanently attached to that round piece of metal; the other side is the cable that runs from the brake to the break lever (which I also replaced for good measure). So luckily it can only fray outside where its visible.
