I enjoy reading, but I don't often get recommendations for good books to read. A friend of mine is really into science fiction and he lends me more books than I can ever finish, but I get a little tired of SF at times. I like the genre, but they all usually follow the same plot line; hero is introduced living a highly advanced lifestyle; hero has sex with amazing partner; hero becomes iaware of a problem that could disrupt the earth/world/galaxy/universe; hero has sex; hero has a space battle; hero has sex; etc; etc.
Well, here is a book that was recommended to me that I can recommend for you. It does not involve speculative science or frequent intimacies, but is an engaging story nonetheless. Its about a Cherokee family living in the American south in the time period just prior to the Trail of Tears. Its a passing of an era type of story that reminds me a little bit of "The Last Emperor" and "Memoirs of a Geisha". Little Tree lives with his grandparents in the hills of the Carolinas, trying to live in peace with a society that doesn't understand and doesn't care about the traditions and culture of the American Indian. A touching story that never preaches, I found myself making long stretches of time in order to spend more time with this book.
I remember my middle school english teacher breaking down as he read a short passage on the Trail of Tears. This is such a moving book.
